3 Medical Solutions for Infertility
By Sunway Medical Centre | Nov 14 2022Infertility refers to the inability to get pregnant after one year of trying to conceive. It’s a common condition that affects one in seven couples. The causes of infertility are wide and varied, affect both men and women, and are also dependent on a number of different factors.
Fortunately, there are advanced medical solutions available which can help couples who are having difficulties conceiving. Some of these options include Frozen Embryo Transfer, IVF Treatment in Singapore, and Intrauterine Insemination. Read on to find out more about how these medical treatments work to help patients with fertility issues.
Intrauterine Insemination
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a type of artificial insemination that is used for treating infertility. During the procedure, sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the ovulation period.
How Does It Work?
A semen sample is first collected before the start of the IUI cycle. It is then stored away carefully to maintain the quality of the sperm. To enhance the chances of pregnancy, women will be given medication to stimulate the production of eggs in the ovaries.
A gynaecologist will monitor the growth of eggs in the ovaries to accurately predict ovulation. Once detected, high-quality sperm is extracted from the previously obtained semen sample and inserted into the uterus using a small catheter.
IVF
IVF, short for In-Vitro Fertilisation, is one of the best fertility treatments available for couples, and can be used to overcome a number of different infertility issues in both men and women. The term “In-Vitro” means in glass, and it refers to the IVF procedure where the sperm fertilises the egg in either a glass or plastic dish.
How Does It Work?
Before the fertilisation procedure takes place, medication is given to the woman to stimulate the development of egg cells. This is monitored over a few weeks and once the follicles have reached a certain size, ovulation is triggered via injection.
The female’s eggs are then collected via a special needle attached to an ultrasound probe. On the same day, a fresh semen sample is also required from the male. The male sperm is then added to the egg to allow fertilisation to happen in a laboratory setting. If successful, this creates an embryo that will be implanted back into the woman’s uterus for conception.
Frozen Embryo Transfer
During IVF, a proportion of patients may have excess good quality embryos. These embryos may be frozen for future use. Using these embryos removes the need to go through ovulation stimulation and egg collection. Frozen Embryo Transfer involves thawing out these frozen embryos and transferring them into a woman’s uterus.
How Does It Work?
For women with regular menstrual cycles, they will be monitored via blood scans and ultrasound to determine the most opportune time for embryo transfer. Medications for hormonal treatment can be given to women with irregular cycles to prepare the womb lining to receive the embryo. If you conceive through this method, then you will be required to continue the hormonal medication for 8-12 weeks to support the pregnancy.
